The Double O Show: Oprah and Obama
Reporter Candy Crowley called yesterday's Oprah-endorsed Obama caucus event in Iowa the "Double 'O' Show," in a report on CNN's website. Talk show superhost Oprah Winfrey has been backing Illinois Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on his campaign trail.
The duo kicked off this weekend's event in key early voting states in Des Moines, Iowa yeseterday. Obama and Oprah's "Iowa for Obama" event took over a downtown arena, packed with thousands of the two's biggest fans.
Oprah's best friend, Gayle King, was in attendance and told onlookers that a nervous Oprah had been awake until three in the morning writing her introduction speech for the presidential hopeful.
Apparently, the speech that she wrote all by herself was a hit, and not surprisingly, the crowd agreed as they showered her with applause and fanfare. One onlooker at the event yelled, "Oprah for vice president."
Obama smiled at the comment and replied that that would be "a demotion." Obama took the stage and praised Oprah for so long that she had to eventually ask him to "move along."
After the speeches, reporters asked people in the crowd who they came out for, Oprah or Obama. With it being caucus time in Iowa, these people can see a politician pretty much anytime. It was clearly an Oprah event, a fact that the Obama campaign fully understands and enjoys. Oprah brought the people, and Obama made his pitch.
Critics say that endorsements do not matter in elections, but CNN's Crowley was left wondering if Oprah was a different story.
