More bad news for the Atlanta Falcons
What a week -- Monday afternoon, the former face of the franchise Michael Vick gets sentenced to 23 months federal time. Monday night, the Atlanta Falcons get pummeled by the New Orleans Saints 34-14 to extend their losing streak to four games. Now this: news that their freshly hired head coach Bobby Petrino has resigned and taken the head coaching job at Arkansas, to become the latest college coach turned pro coach bust. According to Rivals.com, Petrino phoned in his resignation around 5:45 p.m. (eastern time) on Tuesday, a day after his Falcons lost their fourth game in a row by double-digits.
The Falcons website reported, "Bobby Petrino today submitted his resignation as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons will have no further comment until their news conference set for 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the club's Flowery Branch headquarters."
His deal with the Falcons was worth $24 million over five years. He will take a substantial pay cut to return to the college ranks. He will replace Houston Nutt in Arkansas, who served as coach for the Razorbacks for 11 years. Nutt resigned a couple of weeks ago to take the head coaching position at Ole Miss.
This will be Petrinos' second stint as head coach in the college ranks. He spent four years with Louisville, racking up a 41-9 record in those seasons and having one of the highest scoring teams in the nation. His name was a hot commodity in the coaching ranks during this past off season, eventually landing with the Falcons, with all intentions of coaching Mike Vick to greatness. College coaches, please take note. The NFL ain't for everybody. Stay where you are and be the best that you can at it (Pete Carroll, June Jones). The pro game will spit you out (Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban) and you'll always be known as the one who quit.
