Tragedy strikes Florida insurance office
Two women were doused with gasoline and set on fire in a robbery at a Nationwide Insurance office in Lake Wales, Fla., on Thursday, the Associated Press reports. Leon Davis Jr., who turned 30 years old today, walked into the insurance office around 3:30 p.m. and demanded money from Yvonne Bustamonte, 26, and Jane Luciano, 23. Davis, apparently unhappy with the amount of money given, doused both women with gasoline and set them both on fire, Police Chief Herbert Gillis said.
Davis then shot Brandon Griessman in the nose after he tried to help the women. Davis then fled the scene, but later turned himself in at a Polk County Sheriff's substation around 7 p.m. The two women were flown to hospitals in Orlando and listed in critical condition.
Luciano, who was six-months pregnant, underwent an emergency C-section once reaching the hospital. The condition of the baby was unknown at press time.
Capt. Troy Schulze said, "I've worked in this business for thirteen and not seen or heard of anything like this in my career here. ... It was heartless, absolutely heartless, for someone to do something like this."
Davis, a city employee in nearby Eagle Lake, had been suspended from his job after being arrested on Nov. 30 on charges of larceny. Davis was already on probation stemming from a July 6th grand theft conviction. He's expected to be charged with three counts of attempted murder and arson.
