Two chickens in Brandenburg tested positive for deadly virus
Reuters reports that two chickens in Northern Germany tested positive for the lethal H5N1 bird flu virus.
Eleven birds in a small private holding in the district of Oberhavel were suspected to have been infected. Five died and two tested positive for the deadly strain of virus, said the Agriculture Ministry.
Officials sealed a two-mile radius and imposed surveillance in a six-mile radius around the area, said Reuters.
This marks the 22nd occurrence in the northern state of Brandenburg, but is the first incident in Oberhavel. Tens of thousands of birds in Bavaria were culled earlier this year after the virus was found at two farms.
Pakistan on Saturday reported its first human death caused by the virus. Five other people in the North West Province were infected with the H5N1 virus, reports Reuters. Health officials there are investigating a second human death.
three hundred fifty people worldwide have been infected with the bird flu virus since 2003, reports Reuters. More than 200 people have died.
