Momma Spears Cashes In On Daughters’ Trials and Tribulations
23-Dec-2007

According to new reports, Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears’ mother, Jamie Spears, will still have her book published.
All is well in the world of Jamie Spears, mother to Britney and Jamie Lynn. Her new book will be published, according to its future publisher, Thomas Nelson. The Christian publishing company released a statement confirming that Spears' mothering biography will indeed be published, though no specific date has been set as yet. According to FOX News, the statement also mentioned that: "We believe in redemption. Therefore, we are standing with Lynne and her family during this difficult time. Though the book has been delayed, we believe God is at work."
The book, to be titled "Pop Culture Mom," is a memoir of Spears' mothering tactics. Thomas Nelson is doing a huge disservice to its readers by publishing such a book. Spears and publicists are trying to market the book as a faith-based one, showing the success of faith and motherhood hand in hand. A wonderful topic to be sure, but Spears' own daughters are certainly not trumpeting those values which a faith-based book would seek to do. Britney is no role model for young mothers: her blatant disregard not only for driving laws, but for her own children is a shocking testament to how poorly versed Britney was (and may still be) in any form of caring for young children.
If Britney can't be a role model for millions of other young women, surely she could be one for her own kid sister, right? Not really. Maybe younger Jamie Lynn, who plays a squeeky clean teen on Nickelodeon's "Zoey 101" is somewhat like her on-screen persona? According to recent news reports of her pregnancy at 16, again the answer is -- not really. The 16-year old's pregnancy, if anything, has been causing much concern among parents of children as to how best explain how their favorite child star will soon be an unwed and single mother.
A responsible publishing company, such as Thomas Nelson, cannot seriously market Jamie Spears' book as a serious meditation on the success of a faith-based upbringing. Surely Momma Spears will make a bundle from such a deal, much as other tell-alls have netted for their authors, but at what cost? And at what cost to Thomas Nelson's integrity?
And one more question. Would a responsible mother cash in on her misguided daughter's trials and tribulations? Jamie Spears has done nothing news-worthy as of late -- everyone knows she is famous for who she mothered. Cashing in when her family is in trouble -- that's not what a caring and family-oriented mother does. At least she should wait until Britney and Jamie Lynn find some peace and answers in their whirlwind lives before making a bundle off of them.
