Weekend Box Office Dominated by Fantasy and Fun
Here's to the holiday spirit. This weekend's box office was dominated by uplifting and escapist adventures.
"National Treasure: Book of Secrets," the sequel to the surprise 2004 hit, came in at number this weekend, according to estimates. Reuters reports that "Book of Secrets," starring Nicholas Cage, earned $35.6 million Friday - Sunday. The film has earned a total of $124 million so far.
As is often the case with adventure and action movies, many critics gave the movie the thumbs down, while consumers gave it the thumbs up.
Coming in at number two this weekend was "Alvin and the Chipmunks," netting $30 million. The weekend was good for the movie, as it moved up to second place, up from third. The movie has earned $142.4 million in three weeks.
"I Am Legend," starring Will Smith, came in at number three this weekend. The movie has made almost $200 million, and Warner Bros. expected that to be met by Monday.
Tom Hanks' "Charlie Wilson's War" was the fourth top grosser, with a total of $34.5 million over the last ten days.
The sleeper hit "Juno" placed at number five with a pull of $10.3 million. The movie is a slice-of-life tale about a quick witted and sarcastic teenger who gets pregnant, and must decide what to do. "Juno's" weekend take is especially impressive given the limited amount of screens it is being showed on, compared to the other top-grossers of the weekend. The number of theaters showing the movie is expected to increase dramatically by next weekend.
