National Treasure Tops Box Office Again
The sequel to "National Treasure" is turning out to be quite a treasure for Disney. Reuters is reporting that "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" was the number one film again at the box office this weekend, according to studio estimates. This is the third weekend in a row that "National Treasure" has topped the box office, this time earning about $20.2 million since January 4th. This gives the film a grand total of $171 million, nearly as much as its predecessor made in total in 2004.
The sequel is projected as being star Nicholas Cage's highest grossing film.
Reuters also reports that "I Am Legend" was the second place winner at the box office this weekend, with $16.4 million, closely followed by the indie hit "Juno," which is projected to have earned $16.2 million. This is quite a feat for the relatively low-budget "Juno," as it is being shown in slightly under 2,000 screens while the other top box office winners are being show on well over 3,400. The number of theaters screening "Juno" just recently increased to 1,925 according to Reuters.
"Alvin and the Chipmunks" brought in $16 million, scoring fourth place at the box office, coming in strong even after critical reviews by critics. Final data and analysis could change the box office rankings on Monday, as the 2nd, 3rd and fourth place films were all so close in ticket sales.
