Academy Awards Show At Risk
Because of the Hollywood writers strike and recent cancellation of the Golden Globes, people are worried ABC may cancel the 80th Annual Academy Awards, which are set to take place February 24.
According to Entertainment Weekly, it is highly unlikely that the Writers Guild of America will end the strike before the show. However, in the last two weeks, the WGA has managed to persuade smaller, independent companies to meet their demands, allowing writers to go back to work. The WGA could make a similar deal with the Academy. The results would be that host Jon Stewart can work with writers, and actors can attend the awards show without crossing picket lines.
ABC could postpone the show until the strike is resolved, but discussions to negotiate are not taking place, which means there is not yet an end in sight. If the Academy Awards go on as planned, without an agreement by the WGA, the ceremony would be almost empty because most actors support the WGA and will not attend the show.
