Is "Idol" Still a Hit Maker?

With seaon 5 winner Taylor Hicks getting the boot from Arista Records, who’s next?
Is American Idol losing its thunder? According to Mercury News, this is a possibility. With season 5 winner Taylor Hicks losing his recording contract after lackluster sales, Idol seems to be missing the star quality it once had.
It seems as though Idol voters enjoy crowning a winner, but not necessarily buying the album they produce. Nonetheless, Hicks isn’t alone as the first Idol contestant to get the boot. J Records dismissed season 2 idol Ruben Studdard last year, Katharine McPhee lost her recording contract as well, and Season 3 winner Fantasia, along with contestant Clay Aiken, may be the next idols to be axed.
Viewership of the program has flat-lined and the "Idol" tour isn’t fairing any better. The 2007 “American Idols Live” concert tours managed to sell a little more than half the available seats, in contrast to the previous tour's 96 percent.
In a phone interview last week, Idol judge, Simon Cowell said, “You get great years, and then you get not so great years." True or false, viewers will have to tune in to season 7 to find out if this is one of the “great years.”
