“Rent“ Has 106 Days Left

"Rent" will close its doors.
The New York Times states that Broadway sensation Rent will be closing its doors come June 1. After a 12-year stint, the seventh longest running Broadway show in history has been affected by declining ticket sales.
Upon its creation, Rent was one of the more progressive theatre shows of its time. Rent tackled many social issues and introduced a new, more raw and gritty style of production. The show took seven years to complete and includes portrayals of creator Jonathan Larson’s friends and the artists and addicts in his neighborhood.
Although Jonathan Larson died before the debut of Rent, his work went on to win many accolades, including four Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize.
Rent has seen its fair share of profits throughout its run. The initial production cost $240,000, but the show has since gone on to gross more than $500 million on Broadway and on the road.
Over the years, the show has been a hit with many young theatergoers (“Rentheads”), and it will surely be missed. Hopefully the “Rentheads” will fill the seats all the way up until its closing.
