Snowmobile Crash Kills Chicago News Anchor
WBBM-Channel 2 news anchor Randy Salerno from Chicago died in a snowmobiling crash Thursday in Wisconsin, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The day after the 45-year-old's sudden death, his childhood friend, Scott D. Hirschey, 44, was accused of killing the news anchor due to alcohol use while driving the snowmobile.
Hirschey was driving the snowmobile with Salerno as a passenger when the snowmobile lost control and crashed into multiple trees Thursday evening.
The sheriff's department, according to the Albany Times Union, stated, "Alcohol and speed are believed to be a factor in the crash." The department also said, "Hirschey was charged with operating a snowmobile while intoxicated and homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle."
Salerno's wife Irene, on the other hand, says she puts no blame on her husband's friend. She even said, "I'm sure Scott would change places with Randy in a second if he could."
His wife and three children ages 13, 9, and 7, survive Salerno.
