2008 SAG Award Winners!
The Screen Actors Guild Awards are on, and tonight, all eyes are on Hollywood!
A shining night of glamor in the midst of Hollywood infighting between writers and producers, Sunday evening's SAG Awards have turned the spotlight back onto working actors and actresses, honoring their accomplishments in television and movies over the past year. Tonight's Screen Actors Award winners are as follows:
The award for "Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture" went to the Coen Brothers' "No Country for Old Men." The award for "Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role" went to Daniel Day-Lewis for his turn in "There Will Be Blood." Julie Christie won the award for "Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role." Javier Bardem won the award for "Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role" for his role in "No Country for Old Men." The 38-year old Spanish actor is a favorite of many critics, going into the Academy Awards.
Ruby Dee won the award for "Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role" for her role in "American Gangster." The popular NBC comedy "The Office" won for "Outstanding Performance By an Ensemble in a Comedy Series," and longtime favorite "The Sopranos" won for "Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series."
Alec Baldwin also won the award for "Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series" for his role on NBC's "30 Rock." Tina Fey, also of "30 Rock," won the award for "Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Comedy Series." Both Edie Falso and James Gandolfini won for their roles on the much-loved "Sopranos," in the respective categories of "Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series" and "Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series."
Kevin Kline and Queen Latifah also won awards for their performances in television movies or miniseries. Kline won for his updating of "As You Like It," and Latifah won for "Life Support." And the award for "Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series" went to Fox's "24," a popular action drama starring Keifer Sutherland.
Tonight's Screen Actors Guild Awards are a welcome respite for many Hollywood performers and writers, who were able to put aside their differences on Sunday and work together to honor performers. It was announced soon before the SAG awards that Writers Guild of America leaders would not be boycotting the ceremony, reports Variety.
WGA leadership also maintained that there would not be picket lines outside the event, and allowed WGA members to write for the awards ceremony. The fate of the Academy Awards is not so sure yet, however.
