The Show Goes On Despite Strike and Tragedy
28-Jan-2008
Written by: Roxanna Bain

Overshadowed by the writers' strike and recent loss of their own, the Screen Actors Guild held their 14th annual awards ceremony January 27, 2008.

Beautiful faces in elegant gowns and handsome tuxedos could not mask a sense of sadness as hundreds of favorite stars walked the rain-stained red carpet, some wearing black ribbons to remember recently departed colleagues.

Simulcast on TNT and TBS, live from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center, the SAG Awards continued as planned, in cooperation with the Writers Guild. As Carla Gugino, star of Sin City pointed out to the press, “There's a writers' strike, as most people know, but the Screen Actors Guild and the Writers Guild are very cooperative with each other and very supportive of each other. So, the Writers Guild gave a waiver to this awards ceremony, and it's basically the actors and the writers supporting each other."

While gathered to celebrate 2007’s outstanding performances in five film and eight television categories, it was obvious that the recent deaths of young actors Heath Ledger and Brad Renfro were fresh on the minds of many stars, as well as the loss of veterans like Merv Griffin and Charles Nelson Reilly.

As he accepted “The Actor” for his role in There Will Be Blood, Daniel Day-Lewis dedicated it to the late Heath Ledger. He held up the statue as he told the star-studded crowd, "Heath Ledger gave [inspiration] to me,” according to the AP. “In Monster's Ball, that character he created, it seemed to be almost like an unformed being, retreating from [himself], retreating from his father, from his life, even retreating from us, and yet we wanted to follow him, and yet we're scared to follow him almost. ... In Brokeback Mountain, he was unique, he was perfect. ... I'd like to dedicate this to Heath Ledger."
