Switching To Digital Television 101
If your set was built prior to 2006, or is smaller than 26 inches, it probably does not have a digital tuner which will be required by the FCC beginning Feb. 17, 2009.
Mercurynews.com tell us that a digital TV is not defined by only "high-definition" or "flat-panel" screen, but rather it is the inner workings of the set; i.e., a "digital, or ATSC ("Advanced Television Systems Committee"), tuner that can receive the new signals."
However, don't panic yet. If you have a satellite or cable box connected to your old analog TV, or if you only use the set to watch DVD's or play video games, you can keep on using it and don't need to purchase a new one.
If this is all too confusing, you might want to call your local cable station and ask for a clear explanation of what you now have and what you will or will not need by next February.
So don't panic -- you may not need to buy new television sets all around your home -- unless you just want a good excuse to do so -- and have the cash.
