There Will Be Oscars for Daniel Day-Lewis
21-Feb-2008
Written by: Sam Belkin

Day-Lewis up for best actor, There Will Be Blood tied No Country for most noms.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a tie: Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood and the Coen Brothers’ No Country For Old Men each received eight Oscar nominations, including best picture, best director, best screenplay, and best actor.

Daniel Day-Lewis created a stir with his performance of an oil speculator obsessed with making a fortune in Southern California’s oil boom of the late-19th, and early-20th centuries. BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors’ Guild all awarded Day-Lewis with awards.

Many people are confident that he will be awarded an Oscar for best actor, although No Country will dominate the other categories. There Will Be Blood had the lowest box office sales of all the Best Picture nominees.

Jonny Greenwood’s score for the movie is not nominated because most of it was not original to the film, and Academy rules specify that nominated scores must be specifically written for the film. Greenwood is the guitarist of, and the creative force behind, popular British group Radiohead.
