Juno Wins Big at Spirit Awards
24-Feb-2008
Written by: Mallory Groff
Juno wins for best film, actress, and first screenplay.
On Saturday afternoon, as a precursor to the Oscars, the Independent Spirit Awards were held.
The surprising hit film, Juno, was the big winner at the awards. It won for best feature film, best actress for its star, Ellen Paige, and best first screenplay for its writer, Diablo Cody.
The L.A. Times reported that Ellen Paige, while accepting her award, joked, “This is pretty much Diablo Cody's fault.” The film was made on a tiny budget and was the only film nominated at the awards that made over $100 million at the box office. The film is also nominated for best actress, screenplay and director at the Oscars, tomorrow night.
Other winners at the Independent Spirit Awards included one of Heath Ledger’s final films, I’m Not There for best supporting actress and the Robert Altman award, as well as The Diving Bell and the Butterfly for best cinematographer and director, Crazy Love for best documentary, The Unforeseen won the truer than fiction award, and the producing awards went to Paranoid Park and Old Joy. Philip Seymour Hoffman also won for best male actor in The Savages.
