Oscars Excitement
24-Feb-2008
Written by: Jessica Chung

Buzz is more for the show than over who will win.

According to the Associated Press, more excitement seemingly exists over having a glitzy show for the 80th annual Academy Awards than over who will win the awards. With the writers’ strike ending only two weeks ago, and not before dashing the chances for a star-studded Golden Globes, the Oscars ceremony will be a way to honor the best in films this year and celebrate Hollywood’s return to business as usual. As Academy President Sid Ganis said, “Not only have there not been any awards shows, but I think there’s a good solid buzz about the strike being over (and) everybody back to work.”

Unfortunately, less buzz surrounds the Oscar nominees. Sunday’s show is expected to honor the favorites that have dominated the awards season, led by Joel and Ethan Coen’s No Country for Old Men. Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood) and Julie Christie (Away from Her) are expected to win the Best Actor and Best Actress awards, respectively. Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) is the favorite for Best Supporting Actor, while the Best Supporting Actress outcome is split between critics praising Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) and the 83-year-old Ruby Dee (American Gangster) having the sentimental factor since she would be the oldest acting winner ever.
