TV Critics Weigh in on Oscars, Jon Stewart
25-Feb-2008
Written by: Jessica Chung

Most critics disliked the montages left in the telecast after the end of the writers’ strike.

The Los Angeles Times reported different critics’ remarks on last night’s Academy Awards ceremony. Many critics noticed insufficient preparation with the show coming not long after the end of the writers’ strike. Critics also disagreed on how well they thought Jon Stewart had done in his second time as Oscar host.

Frank Scheck from The Hollywood Reporter said, “The short prep time for this year’s Oscars was easily discernible during a broadcast that was heavy on clip montages and videotaped recollections from former winners [. . .].” Frazier Moore of the Associated Press commented, “This three-hour-and-20-minute affair had an underwhelming feel that left the clear impression it was put together on the fly.”

Of Stewart, Moore thought he was “genial, relaxed, and seemed utterly at home,” and “was vastly improved from his 2006 appearance” at the Oscars. Tom Shales of The Washington Post, however, thought Stewart “did only a fair-to-middling job, mostly middling [. . .].” Matthew Gilbert of The Boston Globe said that after “every Oscar moment of ego bloat” and all the nostalgic clips, Stewart’s “aggressively ironic smile was a welcome sight at the podium.” He wrote, “It was good to see Jon Stewart being Jon Stewart.”
