Whoopi Goldberg and Steve Martin also left out of past hosts montage.
Actor Brad Renfro, who died Jan. 15 by what the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office called “acute heroin/morphine intoxicaton,” was omitted from the “In Memoriam” montage shown at the 80th annual Academy Awards, reports eFluxMedia.
Renfro got his big break at a young age, playing the title role in the 1994 film adaptation of the John Grisham novel, The Client. He also starred opposite Ian McKellen in 1998’s Apt Pupil. The “In Memoriam” montage at last night’s Oscars included actors who had died from Feb. 1, 2007 to Jan. 31, 2008. The montage concluded with showing Australian actor Heath Ledger, who died by an accidental drug overdose a week after Renfro’s passing.
A spokesperson at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said to Usmagazine.com of Renfro’s omission, “It was really an editing decision because we can’t fit everyone in. There was no specific reason.”
In the montage showing previous Oscar hosts, actress Whoopi Goldberg, who has hosted the awards ceremony four times, was not included. Goldberg noted on her show, The View, that actor and two-time Oscar host Steve Martin was also left out of the montage.
