Courtney Love trades guilty plea for rehab

Courtney Love hopes for rehab instead of year-long jail sentence in drug case

Faced with a possible jail sentence, Courtney Love entered a guilty plea today as part of a plea agreement that will hopefully send her to a drug rehabilitation center instead. She was arrested in October 2003 on one misdemeanor count of being under the influence of a controlled substance, and a toxicology test proved that she was intoxicated with cocaine at the time. Love had previously pleaded not guilty and was planning to contest the toxicology test. A second misdemeanor charge of putting oneself or others in danger while publicly intoxicated, added in March, will be dropped upon her next court hearing on July 16 in Los Angeles. Love's criminal records are being sent to the judge to overlook so that he can decide if she is eligible for the court-certified drug treatment program. The drug treatment would be outpatient, involving attending classes, taking drug tests, and going to counseling that could last several months. However, if she fails the rehab or chooses not to go, she faces up to a year in jail.
