Fantasia Barrino Crowned New American Idol
After more than 65 million votes, America chose nineteen-year-old North Carolina native Fantasia Barrino as its new American Idol.
A tearful, and overjoyed Barrino was at a loss for words after being crowned this season's winner. "Thank you so much," she exclaimed as she embraced host Ryan Seacrest, adding, "I broke my shoe!"
The two-hour season finale kicked off with an hour long pre-show featuring performances from American Idol favorites such as LaToya London, and George Huff. Season One contestant Christina Christian hosted the red carpet arrivals, which featured Celebrity Idol fans such as Sharon Osborne, and Ray Romano.
Season One contestant Tamyra Gray kicked off the big show with an acapella version of "The Star Spangled Banner," while past Idol winners Kelly Clarkson and Ruben Studdard each performed their latest singles from their debut albums. Clarkson and Studdard also joined Barrino and Diana DeGarmo on stage for a performance of "Dream the Impossible Dream." After a final performance from this season's top 12, and a duet between Barrino and DeGarmo, the results were announced, and the new American Idol treated fans to a soulful and heartfelt performance of "I Believe," which will be released as her first single.
"I've been through some things," Barrino said, "but I worked hard to get were I am."
