Academy Award Winner Wants to Act Cool
It seems that Matlin feels winning the mirrored ball trophy on ABC's sixth season of Dancing with the Stars will prove that she is, indeed, cool.
However, Matlin, 42, has a challenge that might be a bit harder to overcome than the usual two left feet some stars tango with; she is deaf.
Fortunately, she does not feel her inability to hear the music will handicap her. She says she will be relying on her professional dance partner, Fabian Sanchez, to guide her through the steps. "He's my music," she said through her interpreter, Jack Jason, according to the AP.
Sanchez told reporters, "I have somebody who has never danced, who has never heard music, so I can mold her however I want," he said. "She's more sensitive to my lead because she's not trying to follow the rhythm on her own."
Inspired by her 12-year-old daughter, Sara, Matlin says she doesn't want to win the contest just to prove that deaf people can dance. "I just want to be the cool mom," she said.
