Tejano Star Doing Much Better
26-Mar-2008

“I feel optimistic he won’t die.”
Grammy-winning Tejano music star Emilio Navaira’s chances of surviving are improving, according to his doctor. News of his improvement comes days following a crash which threw the musician through the windshield of his tour bus, leaving Navaira in grave condition.
“I feel optimistic that he will not die,” Dr. Alex Valadka said at a news conference at Navaira’s hospital Wednesday. “He’s done about as well as can be expected.” But the neurosurgeon warned that something unfavorable could still occur to Navaira.
“He can still take a turn for the worse,” he said.
Valadka headed the team of surgeons that removed a “hand-sized portion of Navaira’s skull on Tuesday,” which was necessary to decrease the pressure from a bruise forming on the left side of Navaira’s brain.
The operation was the second surgery done to attempt to relieve pressure on the brain following Navaira’s bus crash into a concrete highway barrier in the Houston, Texas suburb of Bellaire.
Navaira remains unconscious at Memorial Hermann hospital, and is expected to stay in Intensive Care for up to two weeks, according to Reuters.
