Beckham Appears In Historic Match
26-Mar-2008
Written by: E. Van Dril
David Beckham won his 100th cap Wednesday night.
In a thoroughly uninspired match between two soccer powers, one thing will be remembered in France’s 1-0 defeat over England. David Beckham earned his 100th cap (meaning he’s appeared for the national team 100 times) Wednesday night, becoming only the fifth player ever to reach triple digits.
Beckham, 32, wore golden cleats to celebrate his accomplishment in a game that many thought he would not start in France.
“David was so excited to play,” a close friend told PEOPLE following the match. “He is still enthusiastic and has a great passion for playing for his country.”
In a match won on a penalty kick stemming from a foul by the England goalkeeper, Beckham’s night was also rather subdued. In the 38th minute he was given a yellow card warning for a foul against the French team. Then, at the 62 minute mark, Beckham and his gold cleats were substituted by England’s manager.
At the end of the game, Beckham came back out onto the field to applaud the fans.
