Leona Lewis becomes the first British female singer to score a No. 1 U.S. single in nearly 20 years.
Reuters reports that X Factor winner, Leona Lewis, became the first British female solo artist in over 20 years to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her single, “Bleeding Love.”
Lewis, who rose to stardom after winning Brit talent show The X Factor, appeared on Oprah Winfrey's talk show this month, which helped promote her song, media reported.
Not even Amy Winehouse has been able to achieve such a milestone. Kim Wilde was actually the last British female solo singer to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart with 1987’s "You Keep Me Hangin' On," a cover of the Supremes song.
Billboard has already compared the Brit singer to the likes of a young Whitney Houston. Lewis’s single, “Bleeding Love,” has already topped the charts in 10 countries, becoming Britain's biggest selling single in 2007. Billboard also reports that "Bleeding Love" has reached the No. 1 position on Hot Digital Songs after selling 219,000 downloads, up 82 percent.
Lewis’s debut album, Spirit, will be released in the U.S. on April 8, although the disc has already sold an estimated two million copies, according to a statement from Lewis's record label, SyCo Music.
