Rapper Remy Ma faces up to 25 years in prison after shooting a former friend.
Rapper Remy Ma will be heading to jail after the Associated Press reported that the Grammy-nominated rapper was led out of a Manhattan courtroom crying, in handcuffs. Remy Ma - real name Remy Smith - has been convicted of shooting a woman outside a nightclub last summer.
According to the defense, Smith fired a shot toward a friend, Makeda Barnes Joseph, she suspected of stealing $3,000. To her defense, the rapper claimed it was an accident.
Joseph was shot after a party at a nightclub in Manhattan on July 14, 2007.
Assistant District Attorney Michael McIntosh said the defendant "took an illegal .45-caliber automatic and loaded it with hollow-point bullets," then used both hands to cock the weapon as she got into the car. "She took every step you had to take to shoot somebody," the prosecutor added.
In relation to the charges held against her, Smith faces up to 25 years in prison for assault, weapon possession and attempted coercion.
According to reports, Smith quietly wiped away tears as the verdict was read, then wailed loudly and sobbed openly after she was outside the courtroom.
Justice Rena Uviller immediately ordered Smith to jail, without bail, while she awaits sentencing on April 23.
Smith’s attorney plans to appeal the charges.
