Los Angeles Times Apologies for Rapper Story
27-Mar-2008
Written by: Roxanna Bain
Both the Pulitzer prize winning reporter and his editor feel they should have done more research and verified their sources.
On March 17, an article on latimes.com claimed an attack on Tupac Shakur in 1994 was carried out by associates of Sean “Diddy” Combs, and that Combs was aware of it.
According to the L.A. Times, their Deputy Managing Editor, Marc Duvoisin, and reporter Chuck Philips issued statements of apology Wednesday afternoon after criticism for the story. They admitted the documents the story was based on appear to have been fabricated.
"In relying on documents that I now believe were fake, I failed to do my job," Philips said in a statement Wednesday. "I'm sorry."
Duvoisin added: "We should not have let ourselves be fooled. That we were is as much my fault as Chuck's. I deeply regret that we let our readers down."
The newspaper will conduct an internal review of the documents and the reporting surrounding the story, according to Times Editor Russ Stanton.
