This weekend’s new movies include a blackjack story, a Simon Pegg comedy, and an Iraq war movie.
This weekend marks the opening of many anticipated films: 21 starring Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth and Jim Sturgess, Stop-Loss from the director of Boys Don’t Cry, and Run Fat Boy Run, the directorial feature film debut from Friends star, David Schwimmer.
The film 21 is based off the best seller, Bringing Down the House, by Ben Mezrich, which told the true story of six MIT students involved in a scam to beat blackjack in casinos in Las Vegas and Europe.
Stop-Loss is a film about Iraq war vets that are learning to deal with coming back home. That includes being stop-lossed instead of discharged. It stars Ryan Phillippe, Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Abbie Cornish.
Run Fat Boy Run is a comedy that was written by the creative force behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Simon Pegg. It also stars Simon Pegg, Hank Azaria, and Thandie Newton. It revolves around Simon’s character who left his fiancée at the altar five years ago but wants her back, so he must prove his worth by running a marathon against her new beau, Hank Azaria.
