The Tudors Returns Sunday
28-Mar-2008
Written by: Mallory Groff
The Tudors will begin its second season on Showtime this Sunday at 9.
Showtime is very excited for its critically acclaimed hour-long historical drama, The Tudors, to return for its second season on Sunday.
The show’s creator, Michael Hirst, likes to look at the history as being more interesting than it appears. He told the Washington Post, “It may be dry in a history book, but if you think about it, it involves people's beliefs and passions and their whole way of life being destroyed and challenged.”
The show, while not completely historically accurate, does try and stick to the story of King Henry VIII's life and his many marriages. Jonathan Rhys Meyers stars as the king, even though he is thin, hot and blue-eyed while Henry was brown-eyed, large and not too attractive.
Meyers has admitted that their physical differences has at times made it difficult for him to grasp Henry, “I had your rudimentary view of him when I first started playing him. I was a little bit more nervous, because I knew I wasn't going to be able to portray the authentic physicality of the man.” However Meyers believes he understands Henry’s psychology. He doesn’t see Henry as a bad person, just a person living under the circumstances into which he was born.
This season deals with Henry’s marriage to Anne Boleyn and his realization of his power. Some critics are calling this season darker and edgier, while those who did not like it to begin with seem to keep the same view.
The Tudors premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
