Leno Apologizes For Gay Joke
While Ryan Phillipe was a guest on Jay Leno's Tonight Show, Leno asked Phillipe, "Can you give me, like - say that camera is your gay lover ... Can you give me your 'gayest look?" Phillipe refused to do it and was obviously a little turned off by the question.
Efluxmedia reports that the joke quickly became big on the entertainment news circuit. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) did not waste any time before asking for Leno to apologize for making the joke that showed no respect for the gay community.
Leno has attempted to make up for the joke by making this statement to People Magazine, "In talking about Ryan's first role, I realize that what I said came out wrong. I certainly didn't mean any malice. I agree it was a dumb thing to say, and I apologize."
Many see this controversy as just another reason that live television is so hard and each topic of discussion needs to be discussed before the show.
