Detroit Wants to Pay Homage to Madonna
Although the City of Detroit denied Madonna a key to the city nearly 10 years ago, Mayor Charles M. Brunner has reportedly written a letter inviting Madonna back for a second chance. The singer who grew up in a Detroit suburb, was considered for the honor in 1985, but according to the Bay City Times, some thought she was too risque to receive such an honor.
It is also reported that (in the '80s) the City of Detroit refused to accept a sculpture of Madonna from an Italian artist; believing that her popularity would fade.
It seems as though, now, city officials are doing their best to make good on past wrongs as the president of the Bay Arts Council - Guy Greve - wants to commission an artist to sculpt a new statue of Madonna.
According to Greve, "The local arts council would like to pay homage for her artistic contributions. I could see a sculpture of her in Bay City. One of Madonna's famous poses could be made into a sculpture."
Madonna's new album, Hard Candy, drops April 29.
