Carey Claims the Charts

Mariah Carey is currently tied with Madonna and Janet Jackson for the second most No. 1 albums among female artists.

Mariah Carey, who is said to be one of the top vocalists in years, is currently tied with Janet Jackson and Madonna for the second most No. 1 albums among female artists. The 38-year-old singer recently scored her sixth No. 1 album this past Wednesday on the U.S. pop chart, which is a feat that is rarely reached. According to Reuters, her album, E=MC2, made the best debut sales week of her entire career, selling 462,971 copies during the week of April 20, and therefore making it the strongest week by any artist so far this year.

This is no surprise though, considering that her previous album, The Emancipation of Mimi, won a Grammy and moved 403,755 copies in April of 2005, landing at No. 1 in its premiere week. Carey has stiff competition for the No. 1 spot with competitors like Jack Johnson, who had 374,619 copies for Sleep Through the Static, his chart-topper for February. Additionally, the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concert album zoomed 28 places to a brand new high of No. 3 with 47,000 units, which at long last became available to all retailers this past week, after its five-week exclusive at Wal-Mart. However, the race is so close for the No. 1 spot that we will all just have to wait and see who claims it next week.
