Overweight Prisoner Sues Jail for Losing Weight
A US prison is facing a weight-loss related lawsuit, BBC News reports.
Prisoner Lloyd Laswell, who went into jail overweight, is now suing an Arkansas prison for causing him to lose weight. Laswell isn't happy about the weight he has lost and says that Benton County Jail doesn't provide enough food for its inmates.
Laswell dropped from 406 pounds to 308 pounds after having spent eight months in jail. He claims he wasn't fed enough and therefore lost about 98 pounds, explains Metro.co.uk.
According to The Morning News of Northwest Arkansas, jail captain Hunter Petray states that the meals average 3,000 calories per day which is more than the recommended daily intake. The suggested daily intake for a male adult is approximately 2500 calories.
Laswell was jailed in September and is currently awaiting trial for murder. He is charged with beating and stabbing a man to death, reports the Associated Press.
As mentioned by Metro.co.uk, Laswell complained about constant hunger throughout his imprisonment. "About an hour after each meal my stomach starts to hurt and growl. I feel hungry again." He highlighted the lack of physical exercise by adding: "If we are in a small pod all day (and) do next to nothing for physical exercise, we should not lose weight...The only reason we lost weight in here is because we are literally being starved to death."
