R. Kelly Trial to Be Postponed Again

R. Kelly’s legal camp files motion to postpone trial.
Jury selection is scheduled to begin for R. Kelly’s long-awaited trial on child-pornography charges this Friday in Chicago.
Already postponed for six years, the Associated Press has reported that Kelly’s legal camp filed a motion on Wednesday to once again postpone the trial. The reasons behind this request have not been released. The Grammy-winning R&B singer faces charges regarding a videotape allegedly showing him having sex with a girl as young as 13. If convicted, Kelly faces up to 15 years in jail.
The trial takes another twist as the alleged victim, now 23, denies it was her. Defense attorneys, including Ed Genson, who often represents the rich and famous, have yet to admit it is Kelly in the video. According to the Associated Press, Kelly, whose first name is Robert, has already settled three lawsuits filed against him in regards to having sex with underage girls, filed in 1997, 2001, and 2002. The woman who filed the latter suit claimed she was only 16 when she began having sex with Kelly and that he forced her to have an abortion. Child pornography charges were dropped against Kelly in 2003 after a Florida judge ruled pictures of Kelly having sex with a minor were illegally obtained from his home by investigators.
Judge Vincent Gaughn will preside over the case and is expected to keep a close watch. All cell phones, cameras, and recorders are banned from the courtroom. According to CNN.com, during last year’s pretrial hearing, Gaughn sentenced a fan, who used her cell phone to snap a picture of Kelly, to five days in jail and her phone to be destroyed.
