SAG Still Without Contract
8-May-2008
Written by: Danielle Terreri
With a month left on their contracts, Hollywood studios are not settling.
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers announced Thursday that they will now focus exclusive attention on making a deal with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
This decision was made after three weeks of negotiating with larger actors union, Screen Actors Guild, sans results. According to latimes.com, SAG and AFTRA broke their 27-year bargaining pact in March due to indifferences concerning contract goals and new-media streamlining. The severed ties amongst two of Hollywood’s largest performers unions may lead to a summer strike, now that each are free to separately negotiate deals with studios.
According to latimes.com, studio contracts with both SAG and AFTRA expire June 30. According to hollywoodinsider.com, while SAG has expressed their disappointment that attempts to work out a deal were ignored, the AMPTP claimed “significant differences” put a halt on negotiations. These differences included DVD residuals, and how actors will be paid during this new digital era.
