Whoopi to Host Tonys
8-May-2008
Written by: Nolan Maloney
Whoopi as emcee could help boost fallen ratings.
After two years with no principal emcee, the Tonys have decided to have film star/multi-award recipient/The View moderator Whoopi Goldberg take the reins.
This will not be Goldberg’s first visit to an award show stage: Besides her Oscar, Golden Globe, and Grammy wins, Goldberg has hosted the Oscars four times, most recently in 2002. Nor will this be her first visit to the Tony Awards stage—in that same year, she won as the producer for Thoroughly Modern Millie as Best Musical.
The move to once again have a featured emcee for the Tonys was most likely initiated by the fallen ratings during the past two years. Having an emcee, such as Hugh Jackman during the 2005 Tonys, could help curtail the nosedive. As a comparison, Jackman’s stint brought in 7.2 million viewers—last year, a meager 6.2 million.
Even though it’s her first time hosting the Tonys, Goldberg remains optimistic. "I'm very excited to be hosting the Tony Awards," says Goldberg. "I'm gonna have a blast."
Tony Award Nominees are scheduled to be announced Tuesday.
