D’Antoni Becomes Knicks’ Head Coach
10-May-2008
Written by: E. Van Dril

Former Suns coach’s contract worth $24 million over 4 years.

Mike D’Antoni, the former head coach of the Phoenix Suns, will take over the same position with the New York Knicks.

After reports of the move were released throughout the day, the move became official when the Knicks released a statement Saturday night saying that they had reached a deal in principle with D’Antoni. The statement also said that a press conference would be held once the contract was completed.

D’Antoni had two years at $8.5 million left on his contract with Phoenix, but opted for what is considered by most in the NBA to be the toughest job in the sport because of the New York media coupled with the terrible state of the team.

D’Antoni, who was thought to be the favorite for the Chicago Bulls’ head coaching job, figures to have a tough road ahead. The Knicks went 23-59 last season, tying a franchise record for losses in a season.
