“Ugly Betty” Makes a Move
12-May-2008
Written by: Danielle Terreri
ABC hit series “Ugly Betty” moves to New York for tax break.
ABC’s hit show, Ugly Betty, will be moving to NYC. According to the Associated Press, the announcement was made Monday by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Governor David Paterson and ABC Studios President Mark Pedowitz.
The show will benefit from a 35 percent tax credit from the city and state of New York. The state’s recently enacted tax credit was created in response to recent production losses to neighboring states.
Production is being moved from Los Angeles and will be filmed in Manhattan and Queens. While hundreds of jobs in L.A. are expected to be cut, it will create more than 200 jobs in NYC.
Prior to the tax break, Ugly Betty shot in a Hollywood Studio to save money. A single episode costs a reported $3 million, as reported by dontmesswithtaxes.com.
The program’s pilot has been the only episode shot in NYC before now.
