Remy Ma Sentenced to 8 Years in Prison

Rapper still plans to marry despite sentence.
Hip-Hop artist Remy Ma was sentenced today to eight years in prison for the shooting of a woman outside a night club in New York last summer. According to NME.com, the rapper, whose given name is Remy Smith, was convicted of assault, weapon possession and attempted coercion. According to the Associated Press, Smith also faced charges of gang assault and witness intimidation for allegedly ordering several male friends to assault the boyfriend of a witness.
The sentence was handed down from the New York Supreme Court. The Associated Press reported an emotional and teary-eyed Remy Ma after the judge's decision. The rapper claims that the shooting was an accident and plans to appeal the decision at a later time. The prison sentence though has not deterred Smith’s plans to wed fellow rapper, Papoose. Her attorney declared that the couple will marry despite the sentence. Remy Ma was set to get married over the weekend, but officials say they called it off after Papoose showed up with a handcuff key, reported USA Today.
