James Garner Undergoes Surgery
13-May-2008
Written by: Marshall Burns

James Garner underwent surgery on Sunday and is now in stable condition.

After suffering a stroke last week, James Garner underwent surgery on Sunday at a Los Angeles area hospital. He built a decades long career in shows such as Maverick and The Rockford Files. His publicist, Jennifer Allen, told the Associated Press that, “He is still in the hospital but my understanding is he is doing well and will be going home soon. When exactly, we have not been told yet.”

Last month, Garner turned 80. He found his way to the top during his career, beginning in the 1950s playing the role of Bret Maverick, a gambler who was quicker with his tongue than his gun and more likely to run away from trouble rather than face it. He was nominated for an Emmy during the show's run from 1957 to 1962, according to the AP.

He also had a run in the movies with acclaimed films such as The Great Escape and Victor/Victoria, and was nominated for an Oscar in 1985 for his role in the comedy, Murphy’s Romance. He also scored another television hit in the 1970s, this time as a wrongly accused ex-convict starting life over in a trailer home on the beach in The Rockford Files on NBC, said Reuters.

More recently, he starred opposite Katey Sagal in 8 Simple Rules... as her father, after the death of John Ritter in the second season of the show. According to Reuters, he also gained the life achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild, their highest honor.
