Artist Robert Rauschenberg dies at home Monday at 82
Influencial American artist, Robert Rauschenberg, died Monday of heart failure at his home in Captiva, Fla., according to PaceWildenstein, the New York gallery that represented him. Rauschenberg was 82.
The Texas-born, 20th century trailblazing pop artist always said he intended for his work to fill the gap between art and life. Rauschenberg redefined the meaning of an artist as he dabbled in all aspects, including theater.
The abstract expressionalist used photography, collage, printmaking, lithography, painting and drawing to create his unforgettable work. Some of his more notable works were his “combines” which combined sculpture, painting, and found objects to create three-dimensional works.
"You begin with the possibilities of the material," Mr. Rauschenberg once remarked. "I think a painting is more like the real world if it's made out of the real world," as reported by boston.com.
His vibrant, playful work captured the attention of many admirers in highly acclaimed exhibits such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Los Angeles, and the Neuberger Museum of Art, as well as on sets for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
