Al Green is being honored for his long-standing musical achievements.
Songs like “Let’s Stay Together,” “Love and Happiness,” and “Tired of Being Alone” are considered some of the best of the 1970s and helped give soul singer Al Green international recognition.
In honor of these achievements, BET will present him with the 2008 Lifetime Achievement award at the Black Entertainment Hip-Hop Awards Show in Los Angeles, on June 24.
Quincy Jones, another music legend, will also be honored at the event, due to his humanitarian efforts. The lifetime achievement award’s past winners include Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Don Cheadle, who won it last year.
Green’s current projects include a collaboration with “The Roots” musician Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson on his new R&B album, Lay It Down, along with a concert tour in states such as New York, California, Illinois, Michigan, Georgia and New Jersey.
Music’s younger generation will also be represented at this event; rapper T-Pain has received five nominations through efforts with other artists such as Chris Brown and Kanye West. Brown’s “Kiss, Kiss” song features T-Pain, while West’s “Good Life” track has him as well.
Kanye West and Keyshia Cole earned three nominations while Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, and Flo Rida earned two nominations.
Nelly, Lil’ Wayne, Mary J. Blige and Mariah Carey are expected to perform at the event; Carey has also been nominated for best female R&B singer at the event.
