Jonathan Demme takes over work on Bob Marley documentary.
Acclaimed director Martin Scorsese has backed out as director of an authorized documentary on Jamaican musician Bob Marley, BBC News reports.
Award-winning director Jonathan Demme is set to take over work on the untitled film which is due to be released in February of 2010, to mark the 65th anniversary of Marley’s birth. Demme’s resume includes an Academy Award in 1992 for Silence of the Lambs, as well as documentaries with Neil Young and Talking Heads.
The new director hopes that the film – being produced by Tuff Gong Pictures and Shangri-La Entertainment – will be a “worthy vessel” for the “spiritual and musical brilliance” of Marley, who died in 1981 of cancer at the age of 36.
Demme is excited about the opportunity, obviously very fond of the film’s subject matter, calling Marley “one of the greatest human beings of modern times.”
Ziggy Marley, son of the legendary reggae artist, also has fond feelings for the new director, praising: “His empathy with my father's body of work and his unique understanding of the musical documentary form makes me confident that this film will be the ultimate celebration of my father's life.”
Marley’s son will also be acting as executive producer of the documentary.
In the meantime, Scorsese is going to be very busy with several projects. He is currently working on films about former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt as well as “the quiet Beatle,” George Harrison.
