Bush and McCain Have Little Interaction at Fundraiser
President George W. Bush and Republican presidential candidate John McCain were slated to make a public appearance together for the first time in approximately three months at Tuesday's fundraiser in Phoenix, Arizona. But the two political figures were only spotted together for a brief photo session in the International Airport of Phoenix Sky Harbor, according to Steven Myers of the New York Times.
George W. Bush was quoted as saying, "If he wants me to show up, I will. If he wants me to say, 'You know what, I'm not for him,' I will," according to the New York Times. McCain ended up delivering a speech in Denver in which he not only reiterated his views on the Iraq war and the nation's security, but also attempted to clarify how his policies differ from those of the current Republican President.
Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama, responded to the fact that President Bush and Senator McCain were not seen publicly together on Tuesday as the fundraiser was rescheduled to an evening event in a private location, according to Myers. In response to the fundraiser being held in private rather than out in public, Obama said, "Senator McCain doesn't want to be seen, hat in hand, with the President whose failed policies he promises to continue for another four years."
