Bill Murray's Wife Files for Divorce, Cites Husband's Addiction
The wife of actor Bill Murray filed for divorce May 12, after 11 years of marriage, alleging that her husband is addicted to marijuana and alcohol.
Jennifer Butler Murray filed the papers in Charleston County, where she owns a home on Sullivan's Island, S.C. She lives at the home with the couple's four children, as well.
Initial reports of the divorce were filed by the Post and Courier of Charleston, and they also say that the Lost in Translation star frequently abandoned his wife and their children.
As is typically the case (see: George Clooney's breakup with girlfriend Sarah Larson Wednesday), Bill Murray's attorney, John McDougall, would not comment on the allegations of his client's personal problems. But he did say that the entertainer is "deeply saddened by the breakup of his marriage."
"He and his wife made loving parents and they are committed to the best interests of their children," McDougall said.
The couple signed a prenuptial agreement before marrying in 1997, which was filed with the divorce papers. In the agreement, both waived their right to alimony or support if they broke up. While this is the case, Murray agreed to pay $7 million to his wife within 60 days after the divorce is made official.
