Wrigley Field to Host Blackhawks Hockey Game
29-May-2008
Written by: E. Van Dril
The game, which will most likely be announced Friday, will air this winter on NBC.
The NHL is reportedly set to announce that the Chicago Blackhawks will play the Detroit Red Wings this winter in a game held in Wrigley Field.
The official announcement could come as early as today, according to Comcast Sportsnet in Chicago. But it seems that a Friday announcement is more likely, given that several Blackhawks Hall of Famers (Bobby Hall, Stan Mikita and Tony Esposito) will be at Wrigley Field to sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh inning stretch Friday.
Chicago became the frontrunner to host the second edition of the NHL’s outdoor Winter Classic after Commissioner Gary Bettman announced last month that the possibility the game would be held in Yankee Stadium was gone, because of a “variety of issues.”
The first Winter Classic was a huge success in January of this year on NBC. In that game, the hosting Buffalo Sabres were defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins (who defeated Detroit last night in the Stanley Cup Finals), 2-1.
