Republican McCain States that He Believes He Is the Underdog

McCain surprised by how close the polls currently are.

According to ABC News, Republican presidential candidate John McCain told World News anchor Charles Gibson that he believes he is the underdog in the upcoming presidential elections.

The Republican candidate also mentioned, in response to the question of what he thought of a potential Democratic combination of Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has been speculated to be a potential Obama running mate, that he believed it would be a formidable duo.

In the interview with Gibson that is scheduled to air on ABC Thursday evening, McCain stated, "I'm surprised, frankly, to see the polls as close as they are, given our brand problems in the Republican Party. I'm pleased where we are."

After Obama had received the required number of delegates to become nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate, McCain called both Obama and Clinton in order to congratulate them on their respective campaigns. The Republican candidate also brought up how he believed Obama was going to win the Democratic nomination for awhile.
