The Simpsons to Out One of Springfield's Residents
27-Jul-2004
Written by: Jackie Backman

The shows producers confirm the outing of one of the shows characters during an upcoming episode about gay marriage.

Matt Groening, creator of Fox's long running animated hit "The Simpsons," announced at a San Diego comic book convention this weekend, that one of the shows characters will come out of the closet this upcoming season.

In the episode, Springfield legalizes same sex marriage, while everyone's favorite dimwit Homer Simpson registers online to become a minister, so he can marry gay couples.

While speculation as to who the gay character is has already begun, the shows producers refused to tell fans in attendance who will be coming out of the closet in the up coming episode. To many faithful viewers, the obvious choice would be Waylon Smithers, whipping boy to the sinister Mr. Burns. Not only did Homer spot him in the gay part of town wearing hot pants, but also, his crush on Mr. Burns has become more evident through the years. Viewers may recall the screensaver on Smithers' home computer, which displayed a scantily clad Mr. Burns dancing back and forth. Lets also not forget Smithers is an avid collector of Malibu Stacy dolls.

Another potential suspect is Homer's loving and tolerant neighbor, Ned Flanders. Although Flanders is known for being a devout Christian, he has been extremely lonely since the passing of his wife, the late Maude Flanders. Since then, he has somehow managed to resist the charms of several beautiful women, including a sexy Hollywood starlet, and a charming Christian music singer. He is also impeccably neat.

Selma Bouvier, Marge's gruff older sister, may be another possibility. Despite marriages to actor Troy McClure and Sideshow Bob, the chain smoking MacGyver enthusiast has yet to find lasting love. Perhaps her search has not yet ended because she has been looking in the wrong places.

Fans will have plenty of time to contemplate who the outed cast member will be, as the episode will likely not air until January. One online poll, taken by NBC11.com, a San Francisco NBC affiliate, shows that out of 13,365 voters, 36 percent think Smithers will come out, while Flanders comes in second with 16 percent. Bar owner Moe Szylak followed with 13 percent.
