McCartney Plays Concert in Kiev, Ukraine
15-Jun-2008
Written by: Marshall Burns

McCartney played to thousands of fans in Independence Square in the capital of the Ukraine.

Sir Paul McCartney rocked the Ukrainian capital of Kiev for two-and-one-half hours this past weekend. The thousands of fans that showed up watched the former Beatle brave thunder, lightning and torrential rain to perform for them, reported the BBC.

He sang Beatles classics as well as his own solo material during the set and told the crowd that had gathered in the main square, “It’s great to be here. Thank you for coming out in the rain,” reported the BBC.

The crowd seemed to love his performance of “Live And Let Die,” which was accompanied by pyrotechnics and fireworks. He gave the fans two encore performances as well. One fan, a teacher from Kiev, Oxana Bulan, told the BBC, “It was fantastic, the reaction was amazing.”

The country gained independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and has been able to have a number of well-known performers in the past years, according to the BBC. Last June, Sir Elton John also played in the capital's Independence Square.
