The Tony Awards Don't Garner High Ratings
This year's Tony Awards, hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, might be the least watched Tony Awards ever with only 6.19 million viewers. The show followed in the new method of the Grammys by adding more performances and deleting some awards from the televised show.
However, CBS was quick to indicate the number of households watching the Tonys increased by 5 percent; though it just means that more people were watching alone.
The best musical award went to In the Heights, a play about the Latino experience in New York's Washington Heights and the award for best play went to a play about family dysfunction, August: Osage County written by Tracy Lett. Although, the musical which garnered the most awards, 7 to be exact, was South Pacific, a revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical.
Something new happened as well this year: short scenes from new, but not nominated musicals were also given time to perform, such as Mel Brook's Young Frankenstein and Little Mermaid, reported the Associated Press.
